David Beckham Academy
David Beckham was born on May 2, 1975, in Leytonstone, London, England to David Edward Alan “Ted” Beckham and Sandra Georgina West. David was an English professional football player and now currently plays for the Los Angeles Galaxy. He is the highest paid footballer in the world. In the year 2003 and 2004 he was the most searched sport personality in the Google search engine.
David Beckham was the captain of the England national team from 15 November 2000 to July 2 2006. He stepped down from the position after the team lost to Portugal in 2006 in the World Cup quarterfinals. At the age of 17, David signed a professional contact with Manchester United and made his first team debut in the year 1992. The team won the Premiership award title six times, FA cup twice, and in the year 1999, the UEFA Champions league, during his stay with the team. He stepped down from Manchester United to join and sign for real Madrid in 2003. He stayed for four seasons with the Real Madrid team. The team won the La Liga title in the final season in June 2006-07 of his stay with the team. In January 2007, Beckham signed with Los Angeles Galaxy for a five year period. This new contract with the Los Angeles Galaxy has made David the highest paid soccer player in the world.
Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson shared a great deal of confidence in David. While with Manchester United, Beckham won the runner up Rivaldo for the 1999 European Footballer of the year and FIFA World player of the Year awards. He kicked two goals in the matches as he played centre-midfield in the United’s FA Cup final win. Two of the first string centre midfielders were suspended for that particular match. But despite his achievements, David was still unpopular among the opposition fans and journalists and he was criticized after being sent off during the Manchester United’s World Cup Championship for a deliberate foul, in a match against Necaxa.
During his stay with Real Madrid for the four years 2003- 2007, Beckham established his football academies in Los Angeles and in East London. He was even named the judge for the 2006 British Book Awards. The team won the Spanish La Liga title, the only title which was won during David’s stay with the team. In the first of nine matches he started, Real Madrid lost seven of them.
On 11 January 2007, David announced his decision to quit Real Madrid and sign with Los Angeles Galaxy. He decided to choose the number 23 for his uniform with the Galaxy team. The moving of the Beckhams to Los Angeles created much media attention and they were constantly followed by paparazzi. Their new mansion was even named the “Beckhingham’s Palace”, by the media, for their media attention and popularity.
David opened up the David Beckham Academy for soccer in May 2005, in east London. David Beckham as a child attended the soccer academy which was run by former England midfielder Bobby Charlton. David Beckham wants his academy to be of the same style, in the similar professional fashion but in a lower key. The David Beckham Academy has only the best coaches in the world for training, and Casey Stoney is a great example of that. Casey Stoney is a trainer in the David Beckham Academy and also an England international player and currently playing for the team in the women’s World Cup finals in China.
