UNICEF: David Beckham surprises young footballers

FREETOWN, Sierra Leone 18 January 2008 — A group of Sierra Leonean football players received the surprise of their lives recently, when football star and UNICEF Goodwill Amb ador David Beckham joined their informal game at a roadside pitch.

Mr. Beckham was returning from a tour of UNICEF-supported programs in Bombali District and noticed the players as he drove to his hotel. He signalled his driver to circle back and return to the pitch, then quickly walked down a dirt path and greeted his brothers in sport. The players were completely caught off guard.

Beckham moves on to South Korea

By Grahame L. Jones, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
February 25, 2008

Fresh from its less-than-triumphant tour of Hawaii, the David Beckham Road Show has moved on to South Korea, where the Galaxy plays FC Seoul in Seoul on Friday.

And the lessons learned in Honolulu, where Beckham and Co. defeated Sydney FC, 2-1, at Aloha Stadium on Saturday night to finish third in the first and possibly last Pan-Pacific tournament?

Well, Beckham is in shape. He again lasted the full 90 minutes, just as he had done in a 1-0 loss to tournament champion Gamba Osaka of Japan. He also once again displayed an angry side, yelling and gesticulating furiously when a call didn’t go his way. That led to a talking-to from referee Brian Hall.

Beckham is using the Galaxy’s five-game preseason tour to show that he is match fit, to prove to England Coach Fabio Capello that he deserves to play in England’s March 26 friendly against France in Paris and thus make his 100th appearance for the national team.

But Capello is more likely to have been impressed by Beckham’s two pinpoint crosses that led to goals by Ely Allen and Josh Tudela than he is by the fact that the 33-year-old midfielder lasted the entire game or wore a scowl as often as a smile.

“The right foot seems to be working,” Beckham said after the match.

David Beckham LA Galaxy 2-1 win over Sydney FC Pan Pacific Championship.

Two trademark crosses by David Beckham has helped LA Galaxy to a 2-1 win over Sydney FC and third place at the Pan Pacific Championship.
Beckham delivered two telling crosses in the 3rd and 45th minutes for Ely Allen and Joshua Tedula to find the back of the net.
Ultimately it was the difference between the two teams as Sydney FC had a goal disallowed and a strong penalty shout turned down in a frantic second half.
“The right foot seems to be working,” Beckham said.
“That is what I do, I get into positions and deliver balls that can help my team mates and the strikers.”
“I like having ists and tonight I was lucky enough to get two so it was a good night.”
Beckham might not have scored for the Galaxy but he certainly stamped his authority on the game against Sydney with his pin-point effort from the right, Allen volleying the ball past Sydney `keeper Ivan Necevski.
Sydney equalised in the 43rd minute when Brendan Renaud scored a magnificent goal.
Following some good build up play, Renaud took control of the ball 30m out and slightly off-centre and hit a drive that rocketed into the top right hand corner of the net.
At 1-1, Sydney FC had the momentum but were put back on their heels just 20 seconds before halftime when Beckham delivered again to hand Galaxy a second goal.
A dipping cross was bungled badly by Necevski and it fell straight into the path of Joshua Tedula, who tapped the ball into an empty net.
The second half saw Sydney FC ume control with Robbie Middleby having two good chances to equalise, one from an Iain Fyfe through ball and another from an Adam Biddle cross.
Jacob Timpano also had a header well-saved while at the other end, Necevski made a great save at the feet of Edson Buddle.
But it wasn’t to be as Americans held on for the win.

Japanese side Gamba Osaka went on to win the inaugural competition with an emphatic 6-1 win over MLS side Houston Dynamo.
Brazilian striker Bare scored four goals, with Lucas and Masato Yamazaki also getting on the scoresheet. Ricardo Clark managed Houston’s only goal.

Beckhams Renew Wedding Vows

David and Victoria Beckham have renewed their wedding vows in a secret ceremony at their Hertfordshire home.

Organised entirely by David, the day was a complete surprise for Posh, only being told that morning of her husband’s plans. It was a small gathering, with merely a few family and friends joining the couple for the occasion.

A source tells the Daily Mirror, ‘David was meticulously planning the big day for months. It was a huge undertaking to keep it all under wraps…Only a handful of people were at the ceremony and they’ve managed to keep it under wraps for nearly two years.’

The couple married back in 1999, with a lavish ceremony at an Irish castle. The renewal was a far more low-key event, taking place in March 2006, but only becoming public now.

Both David and Victoria have tattoos to mark the renewal, with Posh having hers done just two weeks ago. The inking on her wrist reads VIII.V.MMVI, the roman numerals of the date, followed by De Integro, which means ‘Again from the start’ in latin.
